SPOTLIGHT: Community Cinema Across South West Wales
SPOTLIGHT supports the growth of community-led film activity across South West Wales, working with local venues and people to build sustainable, welcoming cinema experiences where access to film is currently limited.
Each venue brings its own identity, audience and ambition, and we collaborate to create film programmes that reflect these differences: from environmental and rural life themes to international cinema, Welsh-language work and family-friendly screenings.
Our Approach
SPOTLIGHT is built around three core principles:
1) Community-led: screenings are developed in collaboration with local people, volunteers and organisations, ensuring they are relevant, welcoming and rooted in place.
2)Sustainable: We support venues to build the skills, confidence and systems needed to continue film activity beyond the project, from programming and marketing to basic technical delivery.
3)Accessible: Events are designed to be affordable and inclusive, often using Pay What You Feel or low-cost ticketing.
Supported by Film Hub Wales as part of the BFI Film Audience Network (FAN), made possible by the National Lottery.
MEET THE VENUES
Y Stiwdio
Y Stiwdio is a creative community space in North Pembrokeshire offering access to creative arts-based and sustainable workshops since 2022. Based in a beautiful round pole timber frame structure in the village of Hermon, it utilises modern, sustainable building materials such as hempcrete and lime, demonstrating heritage building methods and providing a welcoming and inspirational space.
Run by Cwm Arian, it is a place-based community benefit society aiming to support local communities and nature to become more resilient.
Y Stiwdio delivers high quality workshops and activities, giving access to skills and education to very rural, isolated communities. The team has specific aims around building resilience and skills in our local community, engaging with Welsh communities, addressing loneliness and isolation and working with people living with disadvantage.
