Left to fend for himself after his aunt’s death a young boy sets off on a dark odyssey through Central Europe where fear, hunger and prejudice take their toll. Rarely an easy watch, there are occasional moments of respite and a few scenes some will find distressing. Shot in starkly beautiful 35mm black and white, this is a harrowing exploration of social breakdown as everyone the boy meets is engaged in a brutal struggle for survival that leaves little space for compassion.
“I can state without hesitation that this is a monumental piece of work and one I'm deeply glad to have seen.” Xan Brooks, Guardian
