The House

Czech Republic/Slovakia, 2011, 1 hour 37 minutes, subtitles
A beautifully performed tale of life in small town Slovakia, the struggle to make ends meet, and the gulf between traditional parents and their kids who have quite different aspirations. Grumpy Dad is building a house for his daughters but has already despaired of the oldest as she is living with a local loser and can’t pay the rent. His hopes now rest on ambitious teenager Eva, determined to get away to London, but who starts an affair with a married teacher. While Mum tries to keep the peace, its only very late in the day that Dad comes to realise that you have to love your kids for who they are not who you’d like them to be. This minor gem is the kind of emotionally rewarding, real flavour-of-life drama at which ‘Czech’ cinema so often excels.
