Based on a cult graphic novel this is a beautifully realised, superbly atmospheric portrait of a fractured loner and his country’s recent history. 1989, as the Berlin Wall falls and the world he’s known all his life changes forever, Alois Nebel is working as a village stationmaster in the remote mountains close to the Polish border. Haunted by the violent post-war expulsion of the Germans he witnessed as a child, Alois prefers old timetables to people, but when a mysterious mute man returns for revenge his world is turned upside down. With its film noir feel filtered through a typically Czech sense of the fragility of the real, this moody animation is akin to Waltz with Bashir in the stylish way it deals with the horrors of recent history.
