Based on a cult graphic novel this is a beautifully realised, superbly atmospheric portrait of a fractured loner and his country’s recent history. 1989, as the Berlin Wall falls and the world he’s known all his life changes forever, Alois Nebel is working as a village stationmaster in the remote mountains close to the Polish border. Haunted by the violent post-war expulsion of the Germans he witnessed as a child, Alois prefers old timetables to people, but when a mysterious mute man returns for revenge his world is turned upside down. With its film noir feel filtered through a typically Czech sense of the fragility of the real, this moody animation is akin to Waltz with Bashir in the stylish way it deals with the horrors of recent history.

Yn seiliedig ar nofel graffig gwlt, dyma bortread crefftus, hynod atmosfferaidd o ddyn unig toredig ac hanes diweddar ei wlad. 1989, wrth i Wal Berlin ddisgyn ac wrth i’r byd y mae wedi adnabod gydol ei oes newid am byth, mae Alois Nebel yn gweithio fel meistr gorsaf mewn pentref yn y mynyddoedd anghysbell ger y ffin gyda gwlad Pwyl. Gydag atgofion chwerw plentyndod am allyriad ffyrnig yr Almaenwyr yn y cyfnod yn dilyn y rhyfel, mae’n well gan Alois hen amserlenni na phobl, ond pan mae dyn mud dirgel yn dychwelyd yn edrych am ddial mae ei fyd yn cael ei droi â’i ben i waered. Gyda’i theimlad o film noir yn uno gyda synnwyr Tsiecaidd o eiddilwch realiti, gelir cymharu’r animeiddiad teimladwy hwn gyda Waltz with Bashir yn y ffordd gywrain y mae’n ymdrin ag erchylltra hanes diweddar.

“The glory of the film lies not in its story but rather in its atmosphere and imagery” Hollywood Reporter
