The Forgotten Space

Striking images and intelligent interviews illuminate this discursive essay about the state of the world. Through a thorough examination of the ‘forgotten space’ of the sea, and the other major arteries of global trade – railways, roads, canals – we come to understand the impact of unrestrained capitalism on people’s lives. Interestingly it is often those at the bottom of the pile – the Filipino maid, Indonesian sailor, Latino trucker – who demonstrate the cost, both environmental and in human lives that we pay for consumer convenience. As we journey round the world’s ports good clear concrete examples clarify their politically astute, wide-ranging argument.
