A funny, touching, amazingly intimate portrait of one Indonesian family from the slums of Jakarta whose hopes for a better life are invested in bright teenage Tari. While the whole family does all it can to pay for her college fees, Tari like teenagers everywhere, prefers to spend her time hanging out with friends. With his gentle fly-on-the-wall style, Helmrich (who has spent 10 years making the film) skilfully interweaves the stories of grandma Rumidjah, who is trying to keep an eye on the troublesome teenager, and those of her son Bakti and his family. A rare chance to see exactly how life is for young people in Indonesia torn between urban and rural, wealth and poverty, religion and the forces of globalization.
