Rashomon
Director: Akira Kurosawa
Starring: Toshiro Mifune, Machiko Kyo, Masayuki Mori
Japan, 1950, 1 hour 28 minutes, B/W, subtitles
Innovative, experimental and brilliantly constructed, Rashomon is one of world cinema’s truly great works. Kurosawa’s masterly examination of the subjective nature of truth has been often copied but never bettered. A woodcutter witnesses a horrific series of events – an ambush, rape and murder. In the telling of the tale however, each of the four participants gives a different view of what actually happened – is any of them telling the truth? What’s still staggering is the vigour, fluidity and sheer invention as Kurosawa’s camera slices through the forest, bringing a kinetic impact to the action, which is clearly the foundation for modern action cinema. The first film to alert Western audiences to the riches of Japanese cinema and regularly voted one of the top ten films of all time, this is essential viewing.
