Protektor
Director: Marek Najbrt
Starring: Marek Daniel, Jana Plodkova, Tomas Mechacek
Czech Republic, 2009, 1 hour 40 minutes Czech with subtitles
Set in 1930s occupied Prague where the ambitious Emil joins a Nazi-controlled radio station. Initially he tells himself that this is to protect his Jewish wife Hana whose glittering film career has come to an abrupt end. However, once compromised Emil finds that his Nazi overlords call for more and more collaboration, so he becomes the voice of the regime. Inevitably his relationship with his wife suffers. Like The Lives of Others this is a powerfully performed drama with an intelligent script that skillfully raises questions about what happens when you make a pact with the devil and the impact that has on your nearest and dearest. With its beautiful retro look this stylishly evokes 1930s cinema.
