In a small remote town in the Argentine Pampas, the young Nati refuses to speak. She secretly spies on her mother’s violent affair with one of their few neighbours Pichon, the father of Nati’s only friend, who is carrying on a feud with Nati’s father Poldo. This uncompromising, visually arresting vision of a rural life that constantly threatens violence is interspersed with eerie, extraordinarily beautiful animation sequences that carry a huge emotional charge. Well served by a superb ensemble cast, this superb, skilfully orchestrated film with its indefinable, rich and genuinely haunting quality builds to a genuinely shocking climax.
