Diego Luna’s first film as a director is a strange, rather brave mix of comedy, drama, and coming of age movie that provides some telling observations on fatherhood and masculinity through the engaging tale of a small boy’s Oedipal woes. No ordinary nine-year-old, the mute Abel returns home after spending time in a psychiatric facility. His mother Cecilia urges patience but his siblings resent his uneasy presence. Then suddenly Abel starts to speak again acting as if he’s his father, ordering his siblings and mother around and insisting he is the boss. Insightful, unsentimental, with charming performances from two real-life brothers this takes you on a very different, affecting and enjoyable journey.
